A precisely metered airflow feeds the oil through a calibrated nozzle; the resulting droplets stay small enough to remain airborne long enough to travel with HVAC airflow or natural room convection. Cold-air diffusion is the technology specified by professional scent-marketing installations and by hotel and retail buyers who want consistent fragrance delivery across long duty cycles.
How cold-air diffusion works
A cold-air scent diffuser machine uses two fluid streams: a calibrated airflow supplied by an internal pump, and the fragrance oil delivered from a refillable reservoir. The two streams meet at the nozzle; the airflow shears the oil into droplets small enough to remain airborne without condensing on room surfaces. Because the oil is not heated and no water is added, the fragrance profile stays consistent from the start to the end of the duty cycle.

Where cold-air diffusion is not appropriate
Cold-air diffusion is not appropriate for outdoor or windy spaces where atomised droplets would disperse before reaching the visitor. It is also not appropriate for spaces where heating the oil delivers a desirable effect (deep base-note-heavy winter fragrances, for example). Cold-air diffuser consumption benchmarks
Centi publishes consumption benchmarks for the cold-air diffuser line based on a Park Hyatt reference fragrance oil with density ≥ 0.95 g/ml. Minimum-concentration settings deliver around 0.005–0.07 g/h; medium settings around 0.3–2.3 g/h; maximum-concentration settings around 1.9–8.2 g/h; and continuous-on settings around 2.1–10.9 g/h. Actual consumption depends on the density and viscosity of the fragrance oil, the ambient airflow, and the duty cycle set by the buyer.

- Does cold-air diffusion add humidity to the room?
- No. The technology uses airflow, not water. This makes cold-air diffusers safe for wood furniture, electronics and HVAC ductwork, and avoids the condensation issues that ultrasonic diffusers can cause in enclosed commercial spaces.
- Does cold-air diffusion require special fragrance oils?
- Cold-air diffusion works with synthetic and natural fragrance oils formulated for diffuser use, with a recommended viscosity range suitable for the calibrated nozzle. Centi supplies its own fragrance-oil line tested against the diffuser hardware and can qualify third-party oils through the sample programme. Do not fill the bottle with water, alcohol, or essential oils not approved for diffuser use.
- How long does a refillable bottle last?
- Bottle life depends on the bottle capacity, the duty cycle and the intensity setting. A typical hotel-corridor deployment using a 500 ml refillable bottle at medium intensity runs for 30 to 90 days between refills. A 1000 ml refillable bottle at the same intensity runs for 60 to 180 days.
- How loud is a cold-air diffuser?
- The Centi commercial cold-air diffusers operate at 38 to 45 dB measured at 1 m, which is suitable for guest-room and bedroom deployment without ambient noise disruption. The internal pump runs only during the diffusion pulse and is inaudible above HVAC background noise in most commercial installations.
